VG PG Ratios Explained: The Bit Nobody Tells You Before You Buy
Two numbers on a bottle. That's all VG/PG really is.
But those two numbers decide whether your next vape feels like a smooth cloud in your chest or a sharp kick in the throat. And honestly? Most people in Pakistan buy e-liquid without ever checking. I did the same thing when I started — grabbed whatever the shop pushed, wondered why one bottle felt harsh and another felt flat.
So let's actually talk about it. Properly. No jargon dumps.
What PG and VG Actually Are (In Plain Words)
PG stands for Propylene Glycol. VG stands for Vegetable Glycerin. Both are food-grade liquids used in everything from asthma inhalers to icing on your cake at a Karachi bakery. They're the base of every e-liquid. The nicotine and flavour just ride on top.
Here's the difference that matters to you:
PG is thin. It carries flavour better and gives you that scratchy hit at the back of the throat — the one ex-smokers actually miss. Think of it as the punchy one. It also absorbs moisture from the air, which becomes important later (especially in Lahore winter when your throat is already dry).
VG is thick and slightly sweet. It's what makes the fat clouds you see people blowing outside cafes in Clifton. More vapour, softer hit, slower flavour delivery. If PG is a shot of espresso, VG is a milky chai.
Most bottles blend the two. The ratio is written like 50/50 or 70/30 (VG first, then PG). And that ratio changes everything about how your device performs.
The Ratios You'll Actually See in Pakistan
Look, there are really only three ratios worth caring about. Ignore the rest.
50/50 is the workhorse. Balanced flavour, balanced throat hit, thin enough to work in pod systems and small mouth-to-lung devices. This is what almost every disposable in Pakistan uses — the IVG 8K with its 8000 puffs and 35mg nic salt runs on a blend close to this, which is why it hits so cleanly without drowning the flavour. Same story with the Regal 6000 (6000 puffs, 20mg and 50mg options, 500mAh battery, around Rs.3,499).
Nic salts basically demand a PG-heavier or balanced mix. The higher PG carries the salt nic faster into your system, which is the whole point.
60/40 or 65/35 is the middle ground. A bit more cloud, still enough throat hit, still flavourful. You'll see this in premium salt lines. Our IVG Intense Salts (30ml bottles, 35mg and 55mg strengths, Rs.2,999) sit around here depending on flavour — the dessert ones lean heavier VG, the fruits stay balanced.
Then there's 70/30 and above — the cloud-chaser territory. Big sub-ohm tanks, direct-lung vaping, freebase nicotine at low mg (3mg or 6mg usually). Not what most Pakistani vapers actually want. If you're using a refillable device like the OXVA Xlim Pro (Rs.5,099, 1000mAh) or the Voopoo Argus G3 Mini (Rs.3,199), you'll want to stay balanced or lean VG-light. High VG in a small pod clogs coils fast.
I got this wrong at first, by the way. Used to recommend 70/30 juice to everyone because "more clouds = better vape." Then customers started complaining their pods were dying in 2-3 days. Turns out I was giving them juice their devices couldn't handle. Now I ask what device they're using before saying anything.
Why Pakistan's Climate Actually Matters Here
Nobody talks about this. But it's real.
PG pulls moisture from the air. In humid coastal cities — Karachi, most of the coast — a PG-heavy juice can feel slightly wetter, hit smoother. In dry Islamabad winters or up in Peshawar when the air's crisp, that same PG can dry your throat out faster. Sounds like nothing but after 40 puffs it adds up.
VG holds moisture. So high-VG juice in a Karachi July? Feels thick, almost gluey sometimes. Same juice in a Murree December? Perfect.
What I've found, running IVG Pakistan for a while now, is that 50/50 and 60/40 blends just work everywhere. That's about 73% of what we ship goes to those two ratios. Doesn't matter if we're couriering to a flat in DHA Lahore or COD to a small town in interior Sindh — balanced ratios don't complain about weather.
The high-VG stuff? Sells mostly to hobbyists in the big cities who already know their gear.
How the Ratio Changes What You Taste
Here's something weird. The exact same flavour — say a mango ice — tastes noticeably different at 50/50 versus 70/30. PG is a better flavour carrier because it's thinner and evaporates cleaner. So a 50/50 mango tastes sharper, more mango-forward, more of that bite. A 70/30 version of the same juice tastes softer, sweeter, more rounded. Less "mango" and more "mango milkshake."
Neither is better. Just different. But if you've ever tried the same flavour from two brands and thought "why does this one taste weaker?" — check the ratio. That's usually your answer, not bad flavouring.
Menthol and mint especially. Those flavours punch way harder with more PG. A 50/50 mint feels icy and cutting. A 70/30 mint feels like breathing cold air through cotton. Both nice. Depends what you want.
Matching Ratio to Device (The Bit Most Guides Skip)
Your device dictates your ratio more than your preference does. This is the part that trips people up.
Small pods and disposables — coils are tight, wicks are small. They can't handle thick juice. Thick VG-heavy liquid won't wick through fast enough, the coil burns dry, you get that horrible burnt-cotton taste, and your Rs.3,499 pod is finished in a week. So small devices need 50/50 or maximum 60/40.
The Vaporesso Luxe Q2 SE (Rs.4,499, 1000mAh) and the OXVA Xlim Go (Rs.3,499) both fall in this camp. Refillable pod systems, small coils, happiest with nic salts at balanced ratios.
Bigger sub-ohm tanks with fat coils and wide wicking channels — they eat high-VG juice for breakfast. But you probably don't own one of these if you're reading a beginner guide, so don't worry about it.
Disposables like the IVG Max Bar (3000 puffs) and the IVG Pro Pods system (10,000+ puffs, 33 flavours, auto-fill pods) are all pre-tuned. The brand already picked the ratio that works with the coil. You don't have to think about it. Which is honestly why disposables took over — one less decision.

What About Nicotine Strength?
Quick note because it ties in. Higher PG carries nicotine faster. So a 50/50 juice at 35mg salt nic hits harder than a 70/30 juice at the same 35mg. If you're finding your current vape too harsh, you don't always need to lower the mg — sometimes just going to a higher VG ratio softens the whole experience.
The reverse is true too. Ex-smokers who feel like their vape isn't "satisfying" often benefit from a 50/50 nic salt more than chasing higher mg numbers. It's the delivery, not just the dose.
FAQs
Which VG/PG ratio is best for beginners in Pakistan?
50/50 with nic salts. Every time. It works in every device you're likely to own, it delivers nicotine quickly (important if you're switching from cigarettes), and the throat hit feels familiar. Once you've been vaping a few months you'll know if you want to go higher VG or not.
Can I use high-VG juice in my small pod device?
You can. But you shouldn't. The juice won't wick through the tiny coil fast enough, you'll burn coils constantly, and flavour will suffer. If you love clouds that badly, buy the right device for it — don't force your pod to do a job it wasn't built for.
Does higher VG mean healthier vaping?
No. Both PG and VG are considered safe for inhalation at the levels used in e-liquids. Some people have mild PG sensitivity (dry throat, rare skin reaction) and switch to higher VG for that reason. But "more VG = healthier" is a myth people repeat online. It's a comfort choice, not a safety one.
Why does my e-liquid taste different when the weather changes?
Because it actually does taste different. Temperature affects viscosity — cold juice is thicker, wicks slower, flavour comes through weaker. Warm juice thins out, wicks faster, flavour pops. So your favourite mango salt in a Karachi May afternoon will hit differently than in an Islamabad January morning. Try keeping bottles at room temperature and giving them a good shake before use.
